St Eunan’s NS have been successful in receiving their Discover Primary Science and Maths Award this year. This programme aims to increase interest in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) among primary school students and teachers. The pupils and staff have worked extremely hard during a very difficult school year. We would also like to thank the parents who encouraged and facilitated many science experiments at home during the school closures. Have a look at what we got up to. Classes engaged in STEM in the following areas:
1. Science
2. Technology
3. Engineering
4. Maths
5. STEM Showcase
Living Things
5th class learned all about the food
pyramid and food groups
We sorted the types of food into their food group and we created menus to show balanced meals
Junior Infants & 4th class questioned
how plants drink water
First class learned about the lifecycle of sunflower seeds
3rd class planted potatoes in the school garden
5th class planted flowers around our school for Earth Day
Learning about living things from home during school closures
Senior Infants + First Class discovered lots about our senses
3rd class did some investigation work on their heart & their pulse rates through Seesaw
How our lungs work- 5th class made modelled lungs to see how our lungs expand and contract
Some of the lifecycles we observed and learned about
What a transformation to observe our caterpillars turn into butterflies
Baby chicks hatched after 21days
We saw frogspawn around Raphoe during the school closure
Investigating minibeasts
Senior + First Class explored and observed spiders other minibeasts using bug viewers
Tree identification around our school grounds.
Energy & Forces
to metals.
Junior Infants explored magnets
We discovered that magnets are attracted to metals, we found lots of metals inside and outside our classroom.
Heat- investigating the temperature inside & outside our school
Investigating Forces
First & Second class investigated slopes, they found that the toy car travelled further when the slope was increased
Electricity
5th class were learning that an electric current is a flow of an electric charge in a circuit.
3rd class investigated how sound travels while making musical instruments
Fizz Pop Rockets
Third Class made their very own fizz Pop rockets using a fizzy tablet that is made from sodium bicarbonate
Energy + Forces
Senior Infants explored how strong air is using balloons
Exploring push & pull forces in Junior Infants
Junior Infants investigated push and pull forces through playing with different types of toys
Materials
4th class made puppets for Junior infants using a variety of materials
Investigating Materials in Junior Infants
We found lots of different materials around our classroom. We also saw that water can turn into ice when frozen. We froze toy spiders overnight & tried to melt them using water and droppers!
Materials
Senior + First class sorting materials into different groups as well as learning to recycle
Materials & change
Junior Infants observed how the skittles dissolved in lukewarm water.
Exploring acids and bases
1st & 2nd class made explosions using vineger, baking soda and paper
Materials
1st and 2nd class looked at materials used in the building of houses, they also created their own houses used a variety of materials
Lava lamps in 5th class
The children used baking soda, food colouring + vinegar to make their own lava lamps
Environmental Awareness & Care
Environmental Awareness & Care
Exploring our school environment through scavenger hunts and nature trails.
Caring for our wildlife- Making birdfeeders from home
Caring for our wildlife during school closures
Celebrating Earth Day
Scavenger hunts around our school
Science Week
Junior Infants designing + making boats to hold passengers
Science Week
Senior Infants showed Junior Infants their science investigations through zoom.
Volcano experiments from 5th class
Dancing Raisins
Junior Infants first predicted what would happen, we added the raisins to the 7 up & recorded our results. We learned that the raisins collect a gas called carbon dioxide.
More home learning experiements
Katie made her own iceberg with frozen penguins + used salt to dissolve it.
Space Week
We learned all about the solar system, we even created our own models for Space Week
